The entire Juicy Couture phenomenon started in 1996 with just a pair of scissors, a bag of T-shirts and two hundred dollars between co-designers Pamela Skaist Levy and Gela Taylor. The original idea was to make sexy basics for their friends, but they soon realized how contagious their designs were. Now Juicy Couture is among one of the top designer fashion brands available today. Liz Claiborne Inc. realized the potential of Juicy fever and purchased one hundred percent of Juicy Couture. Ironically the same day thatLiz Claiborne bought Juicy Couture, “Vogue” magazine declared Juicy Couture may just be the “Future of Fashion.”
The wonderful thing about Liz Claiborne is that it still allows the two Juicy ladies to be in one hundred percent control of the design concepts. “It’s the best feeling to have the financial freedom and the uninhibited creative control all at once,” states Pamela Skaist Levy. Liz Claiborne completely backs up the Juicy Couture product line and the two ladies of Juicy Couture. This allows them to go leaps and bounds over what they did in the past, thus allowing them to create one of a kind designs.
Before Juicy Couture came about, the two ladies who met in 1994 started a maternity jeans line called Travis Jeans. They would later change the name to Juicy Couture in 1996. The reason they went outside the realm of jeans was because both Pamela and Gela could never find the girly, sexy, and flattering basics they both craved. Thus came the introduction of Juicy´s main designs. Pamela already had a strong background in fashion from having studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Gela was actually an actress who had held roles in numerous films and television shows. The thing they shared though was a creative mind for sexy fashions.
Over the years, both the Juicy ladies would slowly introduce new merchandise to their lineup. In 1999, they introduced jeans to their product line called Juicy Jeans. In 2001, they revolutionized the fashion world with the introduction of the sexy tracksuit that many girls still wear today. The natural progression of P&G and the Juicy Couture line has made them and the company among one of the most recognizable today. Many people consider Juicy Couture a cult revolution with mothers, grandmothers and daughter wearing this brand of clothing. They now create apparel for men as well. Juicy Couture is a top fashion name and they are still growing!
